Rules & Guidelines
In Maryland, waterfowl hunting regulations for sea duck hunting are strictly governed to ensure sustainable populations and ethical hunting practices. The sea duck season typically runs from mid-October through January, though specific dates may vary each year. Hunters are allowed to harvest species like scoters, long-tailed ducks, and eiders, with daily bag limits usually capped at five birds, including no more than four of any one species.
Hunting is permitted in designated sea duck zones, generally offshore areas of the Chesapeake Bay, where hunters may use boats or blinds.
All hunters must possess a valid Maryland hunting license, a federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp (Duck Stamp), a Maryland Migratory Game Bird Stamp, and be registered with the Harvest Information Program (HIP). Strict adherence to these regulations helps protect sea duck populations and maintain a balanced ecosystem.
