Guided Early Season Teal Hunt in Texas Panhandle
Tahoka, TX
Lodge • Private • Guided
Description
There’s nothing quite like the chaos of a Texas Panhandle teal hunt—low-flying, hard-darting birds streaking over the decoys at first light. If you blink, you might miss your shot. Teal season is short, the action is fast, and when the birds show up, it’s as good as waterfowl hunting gets.
The Setup
Before dawn, you meet up with your guide and head to a prime playa lake or shallow slough where early-season teal are stacked up. These seasonal wetlands are critical rest stops along the Central Flyway, drawing thousands of blue-winged and green-winged teal as they push south ahead of colder weather.
The decoy spread is simple—mostly small, tight groups of teal floaters, with maybe a few spinning-wing decoys adding movement. Your guide tucks you into a well-brushed blind or hides you along the shore with natural cover. By the time you’re loaded up and ready, the sky is starting to glow, and the first birds are already buzzing the spread.
Teal hunting is a different kind of waterfowling—quick decisions, fast shooting, and no time to second-guess. It’s the perfect warm-up for regular duck season, but it’s an adrenaline rush all on its own. Whether you limit out in 20 minutes or pick birds off throughout the morning, there’s nothing like watching the sunrise over a Texas playa while teal zip through the decoys.
Common Species are Green-Winged Teal, Blue-Winged Teal, and The Occasional Cinnamon Teal

Can’t say enough positive things about Jonathan and the rest of his crew! Second year coming up and had limits and out the field by 9:40 two outta three mornings. You’re not just another client here you’re treated like you’re the only client. Only outfit I’ll ever book with or recommend in west Tx! 100/10

On a scale of 1-10 I would give Caprock Waterfowl an 11. We have been hunting with Caprock for 5 years now when it come to west Texas geese and crane Jonathan and his guys know what they're doing. And unlike most guide services, they treat you more like family and less like a customer. Highly recommend.

My wife, son and I just finished a 3 day hunt with Caprock Waterfowl. Two days of cranes and one day of ducks. All three days were a success and we had a blast. We knocked off some bucket list birds for sure. Guides Colton and Chris were the best guides you could ask for. We will be rebooking a future hunt. Thank you Caprock!!
