DIY Drop Camp Elk Hunt - Grand Mesa, Colorado (Unit 421)
30,000 Acres of National Forest - ATV Drop-In Access - Motorized Unit, No Horses Required
If you’re a seasoned elk hunter looking for freedom, flexibility, and a chance to hunt rugged backcountry on your own terms, our DIY drop camp in Colorado’s Unit 421 is the perfect fit. We’ll pack you in via ATV (no horses needed) and drop you at a fully equipped backcountry camp deep in the elk-rich terrain of the Grand Mesa National Forest. With 30,000 acres of permitted land at your fingertips, you’ll be hunting some of the most productive and scenic ground in western Colorado.
Terrain & Habitat - Unit 421
Unit 421 stretches from lower oak-covered hillsides up through thick aspen forests and into high alpine meadows and spruce-fir timber above 10,000 feet. The terrain varies from gentle rolling ridges to steep canyons and dark timber bedding areas, offering ideal elk habitat throughout the season. Water sources are plentiful, and the terrain creates natural funnels and bedding zones where elk tend to hold even under pressure.
Elk Population & Hunt Quality
This unit boasts a strong elk herd with excellent bull-to-cow ratios and a healthy age structure. Whether you're hunting during the bugle-heavy archery season or the later rifle hunts, you can expect to see fresh sign and hear elk in the area. Hunters who put in the effort and hunt smart from camp often see elk and have shot opportunities, especially with the ability to stay deep in the backcountry without daily travel.
What to Expect with a Drop Camp
- Fully Outfitted Camp: We provide a wall tent with cots, a stove, cooking gear, water jugs, and the basics - everything you need except your food, personal gear, and hunting equipment.
- ATV Drop-In: We’ll use ATVs to transport you and your gear into a proven hunting location so you’re starting your hunt right in the action. No horseback packing required.
- Total Independence: Once you’re in camp, the hunt is 100% up to you - no guide, no pressure. Hunt hard all day, return to a warm tent at night, and enjoy the peace of the mountains.
- Reliable Support: We provide check-ins and game pack-out assistance as needed. You’ll have a solid plan in place for emergencies and logistics.
