Hunting in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania is one of the most diverse hunting states in the East, with long-standing traditions around whitetail deer, wild turkey and black bear, plus a limited but highly sought-after elk hunt. From the hardwood ridges of the Alleghenies to productive farmland and mountain country, hunters can find opportunities across a wide range of terrain.
Whitetail deer are the centerpiece of Pennsylvania hunting, with archery, regular firearms, muzzleloader and flintlock seasons offering multiple ways to hunt throughout the year. Pennsylvania also has strong turkey hunting, a growing reputation for black bear hunting, and one of the most unique elk opportunities in the eastern United States.
For hunters looking beyond big game, Pennsylvania offers seasons for ruffed grouse, pheasant, rabbit, squirrel, waterfowl and other small game. The state's Wildlife Management Units help hunters understand season structures, regulations and opportunities in different parts of Pennsylvania.
Whether you're after a Pennsylvania whitetail, a spring gobbler, a black bear or a chance at an elk, Pennsylvania gives hunters plenty of ways to get into the woods.
Pennsylvania Tags & Licenses
Pennsylvania hunting licenses are issued by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and run from July 1 through June 30 of the following year. A resident adult hunting license includes an antlered deer tag, fall turkey, spring turkey and small-game hunting privileges. Nonresident adult hunting licenses are also available.
Additional licenses and permits may be required depending on the species and location, including antlerless deer licenses and special permits. Pennsylvania uses Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) to manage deer, turkey, bear and other wildlife, so hunters should check the regulations for the specific unit they plan to hunt.
Elk licenses are limited and are issued through a drawing. Hunters must apply for an elk license separately, and Pennsylvania's elk hunt zones and application process should be reviewed carefully before applying.
Pennsylvania's hunting seasons and license requirements can change from year to year. Hunters should always review the current Pennsylvania Game Commission Hunting & Trapping Digest and season regulations before planning a hunt.
