Hunting in New Mexico
About Hunting in New Mexico
New Mexico offers a diverse Western hunting experience, with rugged mountain ranges, expansive deserts, high-elevation forests, and open grasslands. The state's varied terrain supports elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, pronghorn, black bear, mountain lion, and a range of upland game and waterfowl.
Big-game hunters are drawn to New Mexico for its elk and mule deer, while pronghorn hunts offer a different challenge across open country. The state also has unique opportunities for species such as oryx and Barbary sheep, along with desert bighorn sheep. Many of these hunts are highly sought after and may require drawing a limited license or obtaining a specific permit.
Whether you're glassing distant ridgelines for elk, covering open ground for pronghorn, or pursuing an unusual desert big-game species, New Mexico offers a hunt for those looking to experience the American West.
New Mexico Tags & Licenses
New Mexico hunting licenses, draw applications, and regulations are administered by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. Requirements vary by species, residency, hunting method, and hunt area.
Many big-game opportunities are allocated through a draw, and application deadlines, license requirements, and hunt dates differ by species. Elk, deer, pronghorn, oryx, Barbary sheep, and bighorn sheep may have different application and permit requirements. Some opportunities may also be available through approved outfitter-related programs or other specific license categories.
Hunters should review current New Mexico Department of Game and Fish regulations for application deadlines, draw odds, hunt codes, season dates, legal methods of take, and license requirements before booking. Confirm exactly what is included with any guided hunt, especially whether the advertised opportunity includes a license or requires the hunter to secure one separately.
