Said to be the toughest of the North American big game species to harvest, Roosevelt Elk Hunting is where our hunting passion began as children. Born and raised on the West coast, we have years of experience hunting these majestic animals in Western Oregon's Coast Range and Southwest Washington’s coastal rainforest mountains. Upfront Outfitters is permitted by State, BLM an USDA-Forest Service to hunt from the Washington to California border in Western Oregon. We scout year around for these animals and have 15-25 game cameras year around throughout the coast. The areas that we hunt is a mix of State forest lands and private timber company land that offers a very diverse habitat. The landscape is mesmerizing with Its deep canyons, streams and miles of vast forests. On clear days you can often see the ocean from the high peaks of the coastal mountains. The units that we hunt have guaranteed tags for archery hunters as long as they purchase the license prior to the start of the archery season in late August. Rifle hunters must purchase a guaranteed outfitter tag or apply for a controlled draw with a deadline of May 15, but nonresidents are guaranteed to draw the tag. This unit is a 3-point minimum with a bow or rifle and has one of the highest elk densities in the state. Not only is it beautiful but its elk rich and a great place to notch your tag.
A successful Roosevelt elk hunt in any of our areas will qualify you for the North America Grand Slam, SCI, Boone and Crocket and Pope & Young awards for the Roosevelt Elk species. If you are interested in a quality Roosevelt Elk Hunting Trip don’t hesitate and call us today.
Our organization is licensed through the Oregon Marine Board and permitted to operate on State, Forest Service and BLM lands.
Our Guarantee
Unlike Outfitters that guarantee success or shot opportunities, we know that it is impossible to do so on public land or even private land fair chase hunts. This is especially true when it comes to Roosevelt elk hunting in the rain forests of the Pacific Northwest. Our guarantee is that we scout and work hard year around to prepare for your success. This is what gives us a very high shot opportunity rate. We have game cameras set up in several locations throughout the year and we produce hundreds of pictures and videos of the Roosevelt elk that we will hunt during the season.
Not only do we say that we scout but we can prove it by producing more footage than most other Roosevelt elk outfitters combined. We guarantee that we are committed to scouting year around and that you will hunt hard in productive areas from daylight until dark. We do not drop you off in blinds and leave you. We are your guide to success. We guarantee that you will have a great guide and that you will be in or around elk every day of the hunt. We also guarantee that you will be well fed and that we will give 150% each and every day that you are with us. Other than those guarantees we do not guarantee success or shot opportunities, but we do guarantee that we will do whatever we can to make sure it happens. This is fair chase hunting, and nobody wants to succeed more than us.
Terrain and Hunting Techniques
To sum it up in a few words the terrain on the Oregon coast is mostly steep and brushy. Canyons are one after the other and often filled with tall trees and heavy dense brush. The forest floor is often covered with brittle sticks and leaves making it difficult to move quietly. Once you reach the canyon bottom however it is often a breathtaking view with grassy creek bottoms and a Roosevelt elks paradise. Steep and brushy is the typical for Roosevelt elk hunting and shot opportunities are most often 75 yards and less with a rifle. Areas where the trees have been cut down, known as clear-cuts, provide early morning and late evening opportunities for glassing but a wise bull rarely spends his time in these areas. Expect to use methods such as still hunting in the thick forests, setting up in bedding areas, tracking and the occasional spot and stalk should we be lucky and catch them in the open. We often utilize ground blinds in bedding areas or on ridge top saddles between canyons as we wait for elk to move from bedding to feeding areas and vice versa. During archery season we will spend time calling as we work ridge tops, benches and saddles that are bedding areas for the elk.
Wound Policy
Our guides at Upfront Outfitters will do everything in our power to give you a great shot opportunity within a reasonable distance. With that being said, we do not take risks when pulling the trigger. You, as a hunter, have the responsibility to make an ethical, clean and quick kill. Unless you are 100% confident in your shot, you should not take it. As sportsmen, we are responsible for our wildlife. Thousands of animals each year go unrecovered due to poor shot placement.
We understand that things happen and that sometimes a great shot isn't that great. However, we will advocate for the animals every time. Should you shoot an animal that we deem to be mortally wounded and are unable to recover it, we will then be searching for that animal for the duration of your hunt. We do not have a 48 hour rule or a pay to keep hunting another animal rule.
