Description

Extreme Float Moose Hunt

Year after year, we have had fabulous success with large trophy bulls in this area. This is not your average DIY or do-it-yourself Alaska Moose hunt, but it is unguided. Last year, we experienced an over 75% success rate and we are confident we will stay in this area. There are very few transporters in Alaska that can boast a success rate as high on self-guided hunts as ours.

The reason for this is that we have dedicated airplanes in McGrath, so all we do is take care of moose hunters. We hunt remote Wildlife areas within six thousand square miles of the best moose habitat in Alaska. Also, there are no villages or homesteads near where we hunt, so there is very little local hunting pressure.

What is a Unguided Alaska Moose Hunt?

This is not a typical drop-off Alaska moose hunt; it is a top-notch hunt where we provide rafts for a float hunt or boats and motors to hunt from a fixed camp. Hunters bring their own camping gear and freeze-dried food. Each moose hunter is allowed 150 lbs. of gear. You will mail this to your hotel in McGrath ahead of your hunt, and it will be waiting for you when you get there. The moose are killed close to the water, so packing is minimal, which is important when moose hunting.

Self-Guided Extreme Float Hunt

We're doing a limited number of Extreme float moose hunts. Our normal float hunts are in very good areas, and by offering an Extreme float, I do not want anyone to get the idea that our normal floats are not remote. For the most part, they are just as productive, if not more productive, than our Extreme floats. What makes these Extreme floats different is they are extremely long float that requires two extra days to complete.

All floats are much harder than our boat and motor fixed camp hunts due to the fact you are constantly moving camp, and you have to get to a pickup point before we can pick up your moose. This Extreme hunt is even more difficult. You might experience very low water levels that require unloading a raft to get through some low spots, plus it is just an extremely long float that requires extra days to complete.

Either way, you must be in good physical condition for this hunt and be able to work hard. These hunts have been very productive, with around an 80% success rate. All our normal hunts are 11 days with 9 days of hunting, but these extreme hunts are a couple of days longer due to the logistics of these locations. When you get closer to your pickup point, you could see someone, but by then, you should have your moose and be done hunting.

This is truly one of, if not the best, self-guided moose hunts in Alaska, but with the remoteness and the logistics of getting in and out, it is a very expensive area for us to do, especially if we keep the hunters to a minimum. There are also black bears, wolves, and wolverines in the area.

We fly the river daily (weather permitting), so on the fixed camp hunts, when you kill your moose, you can call us on your satellite phone, and we will put you on our schedule to pick up your moose as soon as possible and bring it back to McGrath. That way, you can continue hunting with your partner instead of babysitting your moose. The float hunts are on smaller tributaries, and we are unable to pick your moose up until you reach the pick-up point.

Hunts will be out of McGrath Alaska located in GMU 21.

Trace and his crew delivered 100% on every aspect of our hunt. My Grandson Blake harvested his moose on his 17th birthday. I don't know who was happier, him or myself? Then 4 days later I was also able to harvest a 60" moose. Our self-guided fixed camp hunt was outstanding. Thank You, Trace!

We were excited for the opportunity for this hunt. Incredible adventure topped off by taking a nice bull. Thanks for dropping us in an area where moose and fish were abundant.

Rules & Guidelines

How do I get all my moose hunting gear to McGrath, Alaska?

You can mail it USPS Ground to the hotel you are staying at in McGrath. For a small fee, they will pick it up and store it until your arrival. You will want to do this 2 months before your hunt to ensure it gets there on time. You should send your camping gear and freeze-dried food, and you can bring your personal gear and gun/bow with you. You will be able to purchase some fresh food and fuel for your camp stove at the store in McGrath.

How do I get my moose back home from AK?

There are several options for getting the meat back. Initially, it all goes to the butcher in McGrath, and they can donate what you do not want and give you shipping options for the meat you want to send home. They can also handle shipping your cape and antlers back, or you can cut the antlers off the skull plate, box them up, and mail them home.

What is your success rate on self-guided moose hunts?

We were 75% successful last season

Should I do a fixed camp moose hunt or a float hunt?

Fixed camp is the most popular. Floats are a lot more work, and you must be in excellent physical condition. See the article "Which hunt is the right hunt for you."

How long have you been in business, and how long have you been hunting moose in this area of Alaska?

Willow Air has been in business for 50 years and has been hunting this area for over 40 Years.

Why do you moose hunt so far from your home base?

There are a lot of airplanes on the road system, and to get this type of quality hunting, you must go far enough so it is difficult to reach from the road system without refueling. I also think this area has some of the best moose hunting in Alaska.
