About Mammoth

Mammoth Lakes is a four-season mountain paradise in the midst of California’s beautiful Sierra Nevada range. Surrounded by the John Muir and Ansel Adams wilderness areas and just 20 miles south of Yosemite National Park, Mammoth is the ideal destination for hikers, backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts of every kind.

Fishing Locations

Hot Creek

Hot Creek is a world class blue ribbon fishery. Wild trout are abundant in this catch and release only gem. A perfect place for beginners as well as experts. The Brown and Rainbow Trout average 10-15 inches with the opportunity for much larger. Hot Creek is open 365 days a year and can be unbelievable during the winter months.

Crowley Lake

Crowley Lake, year after year, is one of the most consistent trout fisheries anywhere. The lake is home to various strains of rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout. The lake is most commonly fished from a boat or float tube. On most days, still water nymphing (or “midging”) is the most productive way to fish. Streamer fishing is great throughout the season on Crowley as well. If you haven’t fished Crowley in September or October, this is a must do.

Upper Owens

The “Upper O” os one of our most scenic fisheries. Most fish in the summer are stocked trout with some of the Crowley Lake fish making their way up and down the river. The spring and fall fish are the best. The Upper Owen’s is open to fishing all year long and is an easily accessible place for fly fishing.

Lower Owens

The “lower O” is an incredible year round fishery which continues to produce great numbers of large wild brown trout year after year. The “Lower O” is 45 minutes from Mammoth and can run some 30 degrees warmer in the winter. Most days offer the unique ability to fish streamers, nymphs and dries all within 5 hours.

East Walker River

The East Walker River (located 50 minutes north of Mammoth), is a world class fishery. This river has always attracted anglers for the possibility of hooking giant browns and rainbows. However, with the abundant stocking of brown trout over the last few years, the East Walker is a great fishery for any level of angler. Some of the best caddis and mayfly hatches in California occur from March through October on the river. From amazing dry fly fishing to serious nymphing for the big boys, the East Walker is somewhere every angler must fish.

San Joaquin

The San Joaquin is one of the most scenic of all the rivers near Mammoth Lakes. It travels in and out of wilderness boundaries and it’s water is crystal clear with deep blue pools, bubbling riffles and fast slicks that are populated by beautifully colored wild rainbows, browns, brookies, goldens and golden/rainbow hybrids that will enthusiastically crush a well presented dry fly.
