A coastal Alaska brown bear hunt is one of the most legendary adventures in North American hunting. This fully outfitted expedition takes you deep into Alaska’s Gulf Coast wilderness, where massive brown bears gather along salmon-rich streams and lakes during the fall season.
Guided personally by Master Alaskan Brown Bear Guide Wayne, this hunt is built around decades of experience, intimate knowledge of the Alaskan bush, and access to some of the most productive brown bear habitat in the region. With a limited number of hunters guided each year, every expedition receives a level of personal attention and dedication that is rare in today’s outfitting world.
The coastal brown bears found in this region are among the largest bears anywhere on earth. During the fall salmon runs, hunters have the opportunity to watch these incredible animals actively fishing along remote waterways - sometimes at distances of only 30 to 40 yards. Few hunting experiences can match the intensity of watching a giant brown bear work a salmon stream in its natural environment.
This hunt focuses on prime fall conditions when bears are concentrated around salmon spawning areas. Wayne strategically hunts what he calls the “salmon holes”-locations where salmon gather and mature bears return daily to feed. These remote coastal environments offer incredible wildlife viewing opportunities and the chance to pursue a true world-class trophy.
The adventure takes place in the rugged wilderness of Alaska’s Gulf Coast, where hunters travel by skiff through remote waterways and hunt a salmon lake system surrounded by mountains, forests, and pristine wilderness. Camp is established in a comfortable wall tent setup with cots, providing a true backcountry experience while allowing hunters to stay close to the action.
This is not a high-volume operation. Wayne personally guides only a select number of hunters each year, allowing him to focus on providing a premier brown bear experience from start to finish. IMPORTANT: Recently, the hunts have been in early fall, before the bears change their summer habits, when there’s still a lot of daylight so the bears aren’t quite as nocturnal, the weather is warmer, and there is often a few less storms.
Wayne has a U.S. Forest Service Priority Use Permit in the Chugach National Forest, Cordova Ranger District. Wayne lived, hunted, and trapped in the Alaskan bush year-round for many years and scouted many areas. Wayne has chosen the best areas that he has found to hunt in. These game management units along the coast are indeed prime brown bear habitat and have very high densities of bears and produce some very large trophies. Recently the Alaska Board of Game has been taking steps to deal with the higher brown bear populations in some of these areas!
