Hunting in Alaska

About Hunting in This State

Alaska is home to some of the most iconic and challenging hunting opportunities in the world. Covering more than 663,000 square miles of mountains, tundra, glaciers, rivers, and remote wilderness, the Last Frontier offers hunters a true backcountry experience unlike anywhere else in North America.

Whether you're pursuing a bugling Alaska-Yukon moose in the Interior, stalking Dall sheep through rugged alpine terrain, glassing for mountain goats along steep coastal cliffs, or calling in a massive brown bear on the Alaska Peninsula, every hunt in Alaska is an unforgettable adventure. The state is also renowned for world-class caribou migrations, black bear hunting, Sitka black-tailed deer, wolf, and exceptional waterfowl opportunities.

Many Alaska hunts are conducted in remote areas accessible only by bush plane, boat, horseback, or multi-day backpack trips. Experienced guides provide the local knowledge, logistics, and expertise necessary to safely hunt some of the most rugged country on earth.

Whether you're planning the hunt of a lifetime or checking another species off your bucket list, Alaska offers some of the finest guided hunting experiences in the world.

Alaska Tags & Licenses

Tags & Licenses

Alaska requires all hunters to possess the appropriate hunting license and comply with species-specific regulations established by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G).

Resident vs. Nonresident Hunters

  • Residents purchase annual hunting licenses and may hunt many species over the counter.
  • Nonresident hunters must purchase a nonresident hunting license and, for many big game species, additional locking tags.

Drawing Hunts
Some high-demand areas and species require hunters to apply through Alaska's drawing permit system. Applications are generally accepted during the fall for hunts occurring the following year.

Over-the-Counter Opportunities
Many Alaska hunting opportunities — including certain moose, black bear, caribou, wolf, and small game hunts — are available over the counter depending on Game Management Unit (GMU) regulations.

Guide Requirements
Nonresident hunters are legally required to hire a registered Alaska guide or be accompanied by a qualified relative when hunting:

  • Brown/Grizzly Bear
  • Dall Sheep
  • Mountain Goat

Most guided hunts include assistance with licensing, locking tags, harvest reporting, and field care requirements.

Hunters should always verify current regulations, season dates, bag limits, and GMU-specific requirements before booking a hunt.
